Tom Van der Heyden started the sourcing consulting firm S3 in 2003, with a mission to help Western companies start or improve their sourcing in China and other low-cost countries. Since then, the company has grown into a group and Tom also shares his experience and knowledge with management students in business schools and universities in Europe, Latin America and Asia.

Meanwhile, she guides more than 500 guests a year from Europe and the US there in English, Dutch and French. Together with three other Belgian women, she was at the cradle of Via Americana, a collective of now eight Belgian guides in eight US cities. Het lijkt simpel: hoe meer marketing, hoe meer klanten, hoe beter je sales, hoe meer omzet. Maar hoe stem je marketing af op de omzet die je wil realiseren en hoe vertaalt dit zich in winst? Hoe werkt dat specifiek voor je bedrijf? En wanneer heb je er tijd voor?

Vandaag leidt ze er eveneens het ESG Team en is ze verantwoordelijk voor de strategie en implementatie van het duurzaamheidsbeleid. “Want bij Arvesta bouwen we aan de landbouw van de toekomst.”

Economie en ecologie kunnen absoluut hand in hand gaan. Arvesta werkt continu aan landbouwoplossingen die én duurzaam zijn én een goed rendement bieden voor de boer. ‘Is dat een uitdaging? Absoluut. Zijn we daar vandaag al 100 procent? Nee. Toch is het de enige weg voorwaarts, want in de toekomst is er alleen plaats voor een duurzame landbouw.’

About the speaker:

Caroline Gennez (°Sint-Truiden, 1975) is the Belgian Minister for Development Cooperation and Major Cities. She is responsible for Belgium’s development cooperation policy, humanitarian aid, and implements projects to improve the living, working and housing conditions in Belgium’s big cities. Before that, she was a Senator, member of the Belgian Parliament and member of the Flemish Parliament. She was also deputy mayor of Mechelen between 2007 and 2012. At the same time, in 2007, she became the first female chairwomen of the Flemish social-democratic party sp.a (now Vooruit). She studied political sciences at the Catholic University of Leuven and did volunteer work in several organisations for many years. Both experiences inspired her to go into politics. She joined the Young Socialists and became their president in 1998.

Her political passions are education, work, and economic affairs. Since 2013, until becoming a minister, she was the chairwoman of the University Association Brussels. She also sat on the executive board of Erasmus University College and the Free University of Brussels. As a member of the executive board of the Party of European Socialists (PES), Caroline is a firm believer in bringing together the different socialist, social-democratic and labour parties in the EU to push for more progressive policies in Europe.

Caroline was born in Sint-Truiden, a small town in the east of Belgium, but has been living in Mechelen for almost 20 years. She is a big sports fan. Growing up, she was a promising tennis player. Nowadays, you are more likely to find her in the stands at a football match. She is also passionate about theatre and music.

Jo is master in artistic, promotional, legal, and budgetary affairs, and easily manages an audiovisual team on tour in Europe’s most prestigious venues (Vienna State Opera, Royal Opera Belgium, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Odeon Herodes Atticus Athens, …). After studying Human Rights and Environmental Law, he enhanced his professional and soft skills by exploring intercultural European programs and events, and by living abroad for over eight years. The negative sentiment about China has created many misunderstandings about how Western companies should deal with this more assertive post-Covid China. During this seminar Bart Horsten will give recommendations how to deal with the new China and talk about cultural aspects of doing business with China. Bart Horsten studied Commercial Engineering at KU Leuven and is a China consultant and entrepreneur since 1998. As a managing director at Horsten International, a family-owned company in the second generation, he is one of the most experienced and broadly skilled China consultants in the Benelux. Bart lives in Belgium, but travels to China on a regular basis and, together with his team in China, contributes his China expertise and extensive network to many European companies entering the Chinese market or buying products from China.
